ALP grab for Sydney Town Hall to oppose new small bars
NSW Labor candidate in forthcoming Local Government elections for the City of Sydney, Meredith Burgmann, has last week gone on the public record in the Wentworth Courier opposing the introduction of small bars into parts of the city, citing the dangers of "alcohol creep".
Now that Meredith Burgmann and the ALP team have established their main point of difference early on in the campaign, city residents who have stood up for a new night time economy - that is an alternative to the established binge and poker machine barns - will be unimpressed with the ALP retrograde vision that opposes small bars just when the City of Sydney is poised to finally grow up and become a fully formed adult, and transform itself to a more mature, diverse and truly international city.
Opening the campaign for Town Hall with a floodgates argument (i.e.
this will release the floodgates and turn Sydney into hell on
earth) is pretty piss weak really, and completely out of
touch with the sentiment so clearly expressed by residents when the NSW
Labor Government introduced these liquor reforms to universal
acclaim.
- on a less serious note, why would you index yourself to the term "alcohol creep"??? (HUH?) ... Think about the great campaign slogans.. Fair Deal... New Frontier... It's Time ( of course)....
but the "Alcohol Creeps"?
For the rest of the campaign, ALP candidates will be backtracking from the questions ( plural ) raised by this campaign opener, which is already being seen as not a legitimate alternative to having a vision, a plan, and a mature approach to the complex amenity issues experienced by the City of Sydney.
