Della Bosca on Liquor Reform
In what was acknowledged to be a tough question, this evening NSW I.R. maestro John Della Bosca was put on the spot on NSW liquor laws by Richard Glover on 702.
"Thats a tough question, we have to be careful how we
answer this" the I.R maestro replied, who then went on to
give us an excellent history lesson about the long hangover in the
first few days after the arrival of the first fleet.
"The introduction of beer drinking - this was a way to get us off
rum"
Another participant in the debate then went on to make reference to
europeans as functioning alcoholics, as well as to inform us that
"stopping a thai restaurant in Balmain from selling wine won't
deal with a broader cultural approach to binge drinking"
In response to further questioning about anti-social behaviour from
novacastrians who can't handle their grog without belting someone,
Della Bosca finished up by noting that "you cant deal with this
without addressing the way the corporate push and advertising are
promoting this behaviour".
Is he onto something here? - has anyone looked at the relationship
between broadcast contact sport and liquor promotion? no.. thats got
nothing to do with it now, has it people.
