What happens after the bill is tabled?
After the Bill is tabled, debate is then adjourned for five clear days - after which the discussion begins.
The next step is the Agreement in Principle (previously First Reading and Second Reading) debate. - During the Agreement in Principle debate, members express their opinions about the principles of the bill. At the conclusion of the debate, a vote is taken. If the House agrees, the bill proceeds to either the Consideration in Detail (previously Consideration in Committee) if there are amendments to be considered, or directly to the Passing of Bill (previously Third Reading) stage. If the House disagrees, then the bill is defeated.
For people interested in understanding more about how laws are passed through the NSW Parliament, there is a discussion right here, although it is now out of date, and the terminology is wrong!
The new Standing Orders are discussed here
Terminology and procedures for the passage of legislation have changed. Bills will now be introduced rather than read a first time. The second reading stage has been replaced with the agreement in principle stage. Amendments to legislation will now be considered in detail by the House rather than by the Committee of the Whole. If there is no consideration in detail stage the Chair will declare a bill to have passed the House unless a motion has been moved that the bill not be passed. If, however, the House considers a bill in detail the House will vote on the question that the bill be now passed
