What happens next? - Part 1
Contrary to widespread belief, the new liquor bill is yet to be
tabled in the NSW Parliament so there can be a vote on its
contents.
At some stage - hopefully soon- the bill will be introduced when the
OLGR Minister gives a notice of motion seeking permission to
introduce the bill, usually on the next sitting day.
At the next sitting of the Parliament, the Chair will call on the
notice of motion for the bill. The minister will then move a motion to
introduce the bill. If the motion is agreed to, copies of the bill are
then made available via the
Parliament's website.
The minister will then makes a speech outlining the principles of the
bill - The Agreement in Principle speech (previously First Reading and
Second Reading). After the speech, unless Standing Orders (the usual
business of the Parliament) have been suspended to allow urgent
consideration of the bill, debate is then adjourned for five clear days
- after which the discussion begins.
For people interested in understanding more about how laws are passed
through the NSW Parliament,
there is a discussion right here, although it is out of date and the
terminology is wrong!
So at this stage, we wait basically. There are three more weeks of Parliament this year, running consecutively starting next week.
hang in there - its been 25 years,
