NSW Legislative Assembly adopts new Standing Orders

On 21 February 2007 the NSW Legislative Assembly adopted new Standing Orders (to replace those adopted in 1994). Whilst essentially only a "rebadging" of the old Standing Orders, use of the outdated terminology can lead to confusion.

In relation to passage of bills the "new" flow chart is :

1. Introduction (previously Introduction)
2. Agreement in Principle (previously First Reading and Second Reading)
3. Consideration in Detail (previously Consideration in Committee)
4. Passing of Bill (previously Third Reading)

For an explanation of the changes, see Richard Torbays speech from the NSW Legislative Assembly, 8 May 2007
